About Dog Registration Types
In the United States we have the following registries.
(AKC) American Kennel Club -
AKC is the most sought after registration because it most often the stamp of quality.
They offer titles for quality or ability, DNA testing, a stud dog registry and
and a vast amount of other attributes that are beneficial to the puppy owner and breeder.
AKC is our registry of choice and we feel the standard at which all dogs should be held against.
(UKC) United Kennel Club -
UKC is known more for their field events and small conformation shows. Many AKC dogs are also
registered with UKC and use UKC events as a starting point and from there move on to AKC events.
(ACA) American Canine Association
(APRI) America's Pet Registry Inc.
(CKC) Continental Kennel Club (not to be confused with the Canadian Kennel Club)
(UKCI) Universal Kennel Club International
(DRA) Dog Registry of America
(APR) American Purebred Registry
(UABR) United All Breed Registry
(WWKC) World Wide Kennel Club
(FIC) Federation of International Canines
(ARU) Animal Registry Unlimited
(CRCS) Canine Registry and Certification Services
(NKC) National Kennel Club
(USDA) United States Department of Agriculture
The above registries are used most often by commercial breeders (puppy mills). These
regitrations are not used by ethical breeders attempting to better their breed. They are
used by breeders that have most often obtained a AKC/UKC/CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) registered
puppy under a non-breeding agreement and bred it against the contract turning to one of the
above registration to make the puppies more appealing to buyers. Some of them give volume
discounts when registering large numbers of litters. A breeder that is inspected and licensed
by the USDA is one that raises puppies and kittens for sale in large volume to pet stores and brokers.
Many people also sell CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) puppies in the U.S. that sould actually
be registered with the AKC. This is also another way of skirting around the edge of AKC's
strict guidelines for breeders. If someone in the US is selling a CKC puppy there is something
going on that is in my opinion "wrong".
Please keep in mind that even if a puppy is registered with AKC that is no sign of quality.
It is up to the breeder to be dedicated to their breed and produce puppies that are of outstanding quality.
I have seen AKC dogs thare are in no way a representative of their breed and very incorrectly bred.
